Finding Strength in Solitude: How Sherry Lou Canino Healed Through Nature and Horses

Healing from narcissistic abuse is a deeply personal and transformative journey. For many survivors, the path to recovery is fraught with emotional wounds and the daunting task of rebuilding self-worth. Sherry Lou Canino, a survivor, advocate, and coach, knows this journey intimately. Through her experiences, she discovered unconventional yet profoundly impactful methods to heal—by embracing the power of nature and building an extraordinary bond with horses.
Her life took a dramatic turn after a relationship marred by narcissistic abuse. The emotional scars left her feeling lost, powerless, and unsure of her future. But even in the darkest moments, she found the strength to rise. "I felt like my life was falling apart, but I decided that I wasn't going to let that define me," she shares. This determination led her to explore holistic methods of healing, beginning with reconnecting with nature.
As she began to piece her life back together, she not only focused on her own recovery but also became a voice for others. Her books, The Silent Abuse and Reclaiming Your Life, delve into the complexities of narcissistic abuse and offer survivors tools for healing. “I wanted to share my story because I know what it’s like to feel voiceless. Writing those books was as much about helping others as it was about finding my own catharsis,” Sherry says.
In addition to her written works, Sherry has created workshops and online courses, including her signature program, Rebranding of Self. These initiatives guide survivors through breaking trauma bonds and rediscovering their identities, paving the way for them to thrive.
Nature Is A Sanctuary for Solace
One of the most pivotal aspects of Sherry’s recovery was her connection with nature. She found solace in the stillness of the outdoors, where the noise of her mind could finally quiet. “Nature doesn’t demand anything from you,” she explains. “It gives you space to exist, to breathe, and to heal at your own pace.”
Initially, her healing began with small, deliberate steps. Daily walks through wooded trails allowed her to ground herself in the present moment. She noticed how the natural world mirrored the resilience she was striving for. The changing seasons reminded her that growth and renewal are possible, even after the harshest winters.
Sherry’s connection with nature aligns with growing research on its therapeutic benefits. Studies show that spending time in natural settings can lower cortisol levels, reduce anxiety, and foster emotional well-being—effects that are particularly beneficial for trauma survivors.
She encourages others to explore the outdoors as part of their healing process. “You don’t have to climb a mountain or go on a grand adventure. Just sitting by a stream or walking in a park can be transformative,” Sherry advises.
Horses in Healing
While nature provided a sanctuary, Sherry’s work with horses brought deeper emotional healing. Horses, known for their extraordinary sensitivity, became both mirrors and guides in her recovery. Their ability to read human emotions and respond accordingly created a unique dynamic that helped her rebuild trust - not just with others, but with herself.
Currently Living in South Dakota with her 3 horses, she shares “Horses are incredibly intuitive.” They sense your emotions and respond in ways that teach you about vulnerability and connection. If you’re closed off, they’ll keep their distance. But if you approach them with openness, they’ll meet you halfway.”
Through activities like grooming and riding, Sherry began to experience a sense of empowerment. The act of caring for such majestic creatures reinforced her self-worth and reminded her of her capacity to nurture and connect.
Equine therapy is increasingly recognized as a powerful tool for trauma survivors. It offers a safe, non-judgmental space to process emotions and build confidence. For Sherry, the lessons she learned from horses extended beyond the stable. “They taught me how to be present, how to trust, and how to embrace my own strength,” she says.
One of her core messages is the importance of embracing solitude—not as loneliness, but as an opportunity for self-discovery. “Solitude is where you rediscover yourself,” she explains. “It’s a chance to tune out the noise and reconnect with who you truly are.”
She often emphasizes the need to listen to your body and emotions. Nature and animals provide unique opportunities to do just that. The stillness of a forest or the gentle presence of a horse can help survivors notice what their minds and bodies need to heal.
Her workshops, books, and personal journey are a quick but deep reminder to "fear nothing." She remains deeply passionate about helping survivors reclaim their lives, reminding them that healing is possible, even after profound pain.
“Healing isn’t about erasing the past,” Sherry says. “It’s about finding beauty and strength in who you are now. Trauma shapes us, but it doesn’t define us. We have the power to reclaim our lives and step into something greater.”
